WAFCC has TWO AmeriCorps Programs!

AmeriCorps VISTA Program - The AmeriCorps VISTA Program is a national service program designed to alleviate poverty with over 75,000 Americans joining each year. AmeriCorps VISTA Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a project at a nonprofit organization such as WAFCC, a Wisconsin Free and Charitable Clinic, or a Public Health Department. With passion, commitment, and hard work, VISTAs bring individuals and communities out of poverty while improving access to quality health care.

AmeriCorps State and National Program - This program aims to assist organizations initiate, improve, or expand the ability of an organization and community to provide services to address local unmet, community health needs, administrative support, patient interactions, marketing, and communication. These efforts support AmeriCorps members serving in programs funded by Formula Program Grants to engage in:

Direct Services, including Patient data management and advocacy
Providing administrative support to clinics and executives

Capacity-building activities that improve the organizational and financial capability of nonprofit organizations to meet local health needs

Volunteer coordination
Grant writing
Health communication and promotion

AmeriCorps MLK Day of Service
On Monday, January 19th, WAFCC AmeriCorps members came together in partnership with staff and volunteers from the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee in celebration of service and unity. Focusing on the connection between environmental and human wellness, our members and volunteers joined to create mental health and wellness kits for community members in need. These packages included items such as food, hygiene products, coloring books and pens, blankets, crisis resources, and more. Learn more about this day HERE

AmeriCorps 9/11 Day of Service
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, WAFCC AmeriCorps members came together in collaboration with Groundwork Milwaukee to reflect on the impact 9/11 had on many individual’s lives, honor those affected by the tragedy, and serve our local communities. In efforts to support healthy food access in urban neighborhoods and increase green gathering spaces for communities, members planted multiple fruit trees on two sites in Milwaukee. Thank you to Groundwork Milwaukee and everyone for coming out, working hard, and supporting our communities. Your efforts will make an important impact and we are grateful for all your contributions. Let’s continue to honor the past by affecting positive change for the future through service!

Future AmeriCorps Candidates, are you considering a year of service with WAFCC? This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to work directly with nonprofit organizations to tackle our nation's most pressing challenges. In order to clarify what a year of service with WAFCC will look like, we've compiled a list of commonly asked questions. What does a typical day look like?
- Each site is going to have different expectations on what a day to day looks like. What we can tell you is that you will be working on projects throughout your year that cover a variety of different activities and experiences. WAFCC is here to support you, check-in, and visit you throughout your year of service.
Can I work another job/attend school while serving?
- You are allowed to have another job/attend school while serving (and many members do!). Your second job/school, however, should not interfere with your service.
Does WAFCC provide housing to members?
- WAFCC AmeriCorps Members are located at sites across the state. Because of this unique set-up, we do not provide housing. Members are expected to secure their own housing; however, WAFCC staff and sites will help in finding a place if needed.
Do I need any certification or medical experience to serve in these positions?
- You do not need any prior experience or medical certifications to serve at our clinics. Some clinics are seeking a bilingual (English/Spanish) candidate, and in this case it is listed on the job description.
What types of professional development opportunities are available?
- WAFCC provides professional development and networking opportunities throughout a member’s year of service. These include in-person events and educational webinars.
Are there PTO/sick days?
- There are 10 days of PTO and 10 Sick days.
Do I need a vehicle?
- All WAFCC AmeriCorps Members are required to have a reliable vehicle to get them to and from their site.
Do I have any say in the clinic I am assigned to?
- Yes, we want to make sure that our AmeriCorps Members are at sites they are excited about, so we will take into account your preferences in regards to location and work-type when placing you at a clinic.
What are potential career paths after completing my year of service?
- There are many different career paths our AmeriCorps Members take following their term of service. Some work in nonprofits or public health, and others go to graduate programs, medical school, PA school, and more. It is our goal to set you up for a successful career.
How often will I get paid? will I receive food assistance?
- Members are paid every two weeks. You will also automatically qualify for FoodShare - a resource to assist individuals with limited income buy food. You will receive a card which refills monthly (~$200 - $250) and can be used at most grocery stores/farmers' markets.
