Credentialing & Background Checks
Health care organizations, including free and charitable clinics, have long been held legally responsible for the providers giving care at their facility. To help free and charitable clinics in Wisconsin obtain and afford liability insurance, the Wisconsin Volunteer Liability Coverage Program was created, and then updated/revised in 2014 under Act 344.
Free and charitable clinics utilizing this program, must perform their own provider credentialing PRIOR to entering a provider in the Online Volunteer Liability Coverage Program website. There are many different ways to credential a provider volunteer. Your clinic and Board of Directors will need to decide what is the best way for you to limit your clinic's liability and comply with the rules of the Wisconsin Volunteer Liability Coverage Program. It could be as simple as verifying your volunteer providers licenses are current to more complicated and costly criminal background checks. It is important that your clinic has a formal policy on their credentialing process and that this process is consistently followed. WAFCC does encourage background checks on volunteers in addition to credentialing. We understand that there is frequently a fee associated with this service. Many clinics that perform background checks ask their volunteers for a donation to cover the cost of background checks.
Please see below for credentialing/background resources and share a sample process.
